Rachel’s Angels is a long-established, important parish ministry that provides invaluable outreach to our parish and surrounding community in various capacities. Sister Rachel Richards inaugurated the program to address the unmet needs of our community in a more personal way — to unfurl our faith to those who are sick, neglected, grieving, and lonely–to show our care and concern for them. This ministry comprises the quintessence of what it means to be a disciple of Christ. and through this work. good is truly being accomplished as faith, hope, and love is translated to those in need.
One of Rachel’s Angels roles is to act as extraordinary ministers of communion for our parish with shut ins and those in nursing homes who do not have easy access to receiving the sacraments. These individuals are often scared and vulnerable in their situation, and these lay ministers’ hands, at times, seem as though the hands of God are ministering to them. For that moment, the patient and the lay minister are united in Christ, one with each other. Ultimately, the person becomes more relaxed and communicative, and a special friendship will begin and often endure. Rachel’s Angels visits with our sick and suffering and provides a unique and important framework for their recovery.
Rachel’s Angels also sponsors the Senior Luncheon/Bingo that is held on the second Sunday of the month following the 11:00 am Mass. A wonderful lunch is served to our seniors who attend, as fellowship and fun abound! Rachel Angel’s also sponsors a mini trip to Belterra Casino twice per year for the senior group.
This fine group of volunteers has also provided Christmas gifts to shut-ins at Christmas, but their true gift is in the giving of themselves to people in need.
If you would like to join Rachel Angels or need more information, please call the parish office. Remember, St. Pope John Paul II said, “Life is a talent entrusted to us so we can transform it and increase it, making it a gift to others.”
