The Eucharist, also called The Blessed Sacrament, nourishes our faith. Its signs are the bread and wine we receive–the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. The Eucharist is foundational to our faith. Jesus gives himself to us in the Eucharist as spiritual nourishment because he loves us. Through Eucharist we become united to Christ and to one another. Through his death and Resurrection, Jesus has conquered sin and death and reconciled us to God. The Eucharist is the memorial of this sacrifice. We gather as a Church to remember and to be present at the sacrifice of Christ.
In Eucharist we share in God’s plan of salvation. We are united with the person of Christ, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him” (Jn 6:56) and share in the divine life of Christ: “Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.” (Jn 6:57)
According to Pope Francis: “Every celebration of the Eucharist is a ray of light of the unsetting sun that is the Risen Jesus Christ,” the pope told the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s square for his weekly general audience. “To participate in Mass, especially on Sunday, means entering in the victory of the Risen, being illuminated by his light, warmed by his warmth.”
