Saint Peter Claver, S.J., whose feast day is March 7, was a Spanish priest who left his homeland to become a missionary in the New World. He sailed into Cartagena, a Caribbean port city and was ordained there in 1615. By this time the slave trade had been established in the Americas for nearly100 years, and Cartagena was its chief center. He was devoted to the care of enslaved people and was a champion to the African American community. During the 40 years of his ministry, it is estimated he personally baptized 300,000 people. He is considered a heroic example of the Christian practice of love and human rights.
